This tag group is dedicated to original species, that is it contains fictional species created by the furry community. These characters do not belong to media franchises and their mediums (film, television, literature, video games) but independent creators and small-scale projects.

Original species tend to fall into three categories: "open", "semi-open", and "closed".

Open - Species anyone can make, although some may require you to follow a guideline(s) to be considered one.
Closed - Species you must ask or pay ("commission") the creator to make or use.
Semi-open - Species that have elements of both closed and open species. This may involve having characteristics available for any person to make a character with, but then have several reserved characteristics that must be purchased. It could also involve a system in which every user gets one free character, but all characters after that must be bought
