They had a more alien looking design back pre-Avatar 1, but test audiences couldn't empathize with them, so they redesigned the Na'vi to be more human looking. Unfortunate compromises for a mass audience

(Yes I know the reason why we hear so many stories about negative test audience response resulting in changes being made is because negative responses usually have bigger impacts than positive ones and people like finding out more about cut content for movies and games, just let me do the funny)
