Topic: [REJECTED] Splitting ancient art BUR

The bulk update request #13216 has been rejected.

Reason: Based on topic #61874 a while back and I wonder if the last suggestion is sufficient for the BUR, which goes like this:

• ancient age: <501
• middle age: 501 - 1500
• early modern age: 1501 - 1900
• modern age: 1901 - 1975/1965 1979

If it goes through then the following one would be:

imply before_common_era -> ancient_age
imply 1st_century -> ancient_age
…
imply 5th_century -> ancient_age

imply 6th_century -> middle_age
…
imply 15th_century -> middle_age

imply 16th_century -> early_modern_age
…
imply 19th_century -> early_modern_age

While for "(early) modern" we have to imply individual years because they're overlapping. If you don't think it's good enough, please suggest it here

edit 1:

• change “art” to “age”
• add before common era (anything before 1 CE/AD) as well
• modern age starts in the 20th century, so no overlapping (since the 80s & 90s hasn’t been implied yet, so let’s just use the century)

edit 2:

• maybe this would work so the 80s, 90s, and 2000 can be part of the 20th century

A few 19th_century posts don't have a more precise dating than the 19th century as a whole and could be left outside of the new tags. They could be tagged by "vibes" but I think they're one of the reasons why an umbrella tag can be handy to have.

I voted :| because even though I think it would be good to split it up, the split(s) should happen on a century basis (except for 20th_century- which annoyingly already says it shouldn't be applied to 80s/90s art) and there should still be an umbrella tag.

Alright then, I can see that problem arises. But how should we fix it? Should "early modern art" ends in 1800 (end of the 18th century) or 1900 (end of the 19th century)? I think the former would fit because it's closely tied with the industrial revolution of the time. But then again, it would make sense to use 1900s as the starting point for what most people think of as "modern art" as in modern modern art

I imagine that was done to distinguish "pre-fandom" art from later art, the mid-70s, which as I've said in the other thread, I don't think warrants separation. The late 1800s/early 1900s or whenever mass marketing and commercialization really took off is the last significant period I think we need to distinguish as the most recent major shift in art production, as far as ancient/middle/pre-modern/modern goes. I honestly don't see a need to not tag 20th_century for art made in the 80s and 90s, after all it's been... 26 years since the 20th century ended...

not too keen on the terms you selected here, particularly the 'middle art' idea, its ambiguous while the intended propose still ends up causing it to being eurocentric, the time covered by a 'middle' age is different depending on the region of the world your talking about.

That’s the best I could come up in the original thread, “middle” age is anything but non eurocentric, it’s anywhere from the fall of the roman empire to the fall of another roman empire. “post classical” is considered world history’s middle age though it can be a little confusing as the thread mentioned

I wouldn't be opposed to changing that. In my opinion, the current cut off was basically for simplicity's sake — 1 implication versus 100. However, rather than implying 20th century to any art period, we should instead only imply the appropriate years (1901-2000) directly.

Therefore, based on Whatismyname1234's BUR above, we swap

imply 20th_century -> modern_age

with

imply 1901 -> modern_age
...
imply 1979 -> modern_age

in addition to

imply 1980 -> 20th_century
...
imply 2000 -> 20th_century

Perhaps we can call it something like Classical Age? Granted, this is usually associated with Classical Antiquity (ancient Greek and Roman art).

Pre-modern Age? Just lump it in as Ancient Age with the stuff from Antiquity? Call it Post-Ancient Age?

Then again, "middle" does make sense as it's in the middle between "ancient" and "modern".

Personally, I like "period" — Ancient Period, Middle Period, Early Modern Period, and Modern Period — as it sounds more art historic to me.
