The bulk update request #2825 has been rejected.

Reason: Multiple versions of tag. People were adding plapping at one point. Onomatopoeia covers this.

what about sound posts? are these tags on any of those?

edit: yeah, there's eleven pages of tag edits of people adding plap_(sound) to sound posts, which should not have the menacing (meme) tag, maybe -> sound_effects would be better?
although, I'm not sure if it's really necessary to alias specific sound effects/onomatopoeia away, we have a few things like moan and menacing_(meme) tagged, the latter of which is onomatopoeia (although it's considered a "meme" copytag, so hmm).

Updated the list. I'm seeing tags like drip_(sound_effect), fwomp, bwomp, glurk, etc. Someone even tagged splooge_(sound). I'm convinced some are just trying to tag every sfx imaginable.

Plap has over 1700 entries, I don't think it's a good idea to alias it away if so many people find it to be a useful tag. I can imagine users want sex posts with those specific onomatopoeia.

Is it that they find it a useful tag? Or are some people adding it to a bunch of posts but not actually ever searching it? And given other searchable details of the image, how useful is it actually compared to sound_effect (noting that a search doesn't need to zero-in on a specific post, just make it easier to find a particular post or type of post).

It's at times like these I wish the admins could provide statistics on how many times a tag has ever actually been used in either search expressions or blacklists, to shut down the arguments of "but that might be someone's emotional support tag" forever.

The same user responsible for most of this nonsense is also currently engaged in a project to tag comics by number of panels and various forms of panel layout, which seems of equally dubious value.

Tags like pfft, brap, and so on. It's mainly Vile. They're spelling out every sfx they come across.
It would be like taking this image and creating a "bwump" tag.

While I agree that exhaustively listing every onomatopoeia isn't a tag model that's going to be viable long term, onomatopoeia on its own is about as useful to anyone as mammal right now. Simply aliasing everything back into the base tag just because you disagree with the subtags being used seems to me like the most counterproductive thing you could do with onomatopoeia.

onomatopoeia isn't used nearly as much as mammal, not even within comics. onomatopoeia is helpful in trimming down search results given any other details about the image you're looking for. Besides, how could you subtag it, aside from using each individual word? And how would you deal with non-ASCII characters, which we can't tag?

All I see is more bloat being tacked on.

I mean, we have the *_onomatopoeia tags (contact_onomatopoeia and motion_onomatopoeia) as valid subtags now so just alias the sound effect tags to those, or create new ones for the ones that don't fit.

They seem to be adding a crapton of overly-specific tags, like repeated_text, repeated_dialogue, different_sound_effects, extended_sound_effect, vowelless, vowelless_reaction, vowelless_sound_effect, conjoined_speech_bubble, panel_skew, etc. It's one thing to add tags to your uploads that you think are valid or an occasional post you happen to run across, but they've been going through existing posts explicitly to add questionable tags (thousands, if not tens of thousands, in just the past two months) with no discussion at all if they're warranted. So, I'm gonna break the mold here and say that if the problem is the fear of tag bloat and that there's a lack of discussion going on, why don't we do this instead:

All tags that you feel end up risking being tag bloat, why don't you put them in a section in a new post and explain why you feel they may cause tag bloat, so they can discussed by other viewers. That way, any problem tags that shouldn't exist can be caught, any tags that might end up being problems can be discussed so they don't end up as tag bloat or as invalid tags, and any tags that only appear to be problems (or are otherwise a problem in your opinion) can be discussed and explained better.

Because I feel like what's going on in here is not gonna result in any problem getting resolved. Instead, what would happen is that no one is gonna respond to this other than people looking to echo their problems, it's gonna get buried under all the other forum threads, and finally any perceived problem will continue to sour and rot until some form of outburst occurs, either in the tickets or in the forums. It's happened before, it's happened to me before, and it doesn't need to happen again. Instead, what needs to happen is a discussion on what tags need to be aliased to sound_effect, what tags need to be aliased to tags implying sound_effect, and what tags need to imply sound_effect so that a tag group nobody really goes out of their way to use can be made easier to use and more intuitive instead of falling into neglect and eventually, disuse. The last thing we need is another loli and shota problem, where only one or two people know how to use them and they get misused constantly.

The reasons and discussions tends to be the same. You have people saying such tags are unnecessarily specific (you can do a good enough job searching using less specific tags; there are diminishing returns as you get more specific), and it's either not used too often (making it unhelpful for searching/blacklisting as the desired images are likely to be lacking it) or used too much (making it unhelpful for searching/blacklisting as it would include the vast majority of the site). Then you get people saying it isn't overly specific and it can be useful and they'll personally manage the tag. People say there's never any harm in having more tags on a post, others say it makes it harder to notice missing obvious tags or when a tag is used incorrectly.

You can just copy-paste the same discussion every time the topic of tag bloat comes up.
