Yamaha Corporation (ヤマハ株式会社, Yamaha Kabushiki gaisha) is a Japanese multinational music and audio equipment manufacturing company based in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan. Yamaha is the world's largest music instrument manufacturer, including but not limited to pianos, guitars, drums, woodwind instruments, and audio equipment. It also owns the two record companies Yamaha Yamaha Music Communications and Yamaha Entertainment Group.
Founded in 1887 as Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. by Torakusu Yamaha, Yamaha started out as a manufacturer of reed organs. It quickly expanded, creating pianos, and manufacturing new instruments over time as they gained popularity. Following the Second World War, Yamaha pushed its now unused factories into producing Motorcycles. With heavy success in motorcycles, Yamaha Motor Co. would be split off to manufacture motorcycles as the Yamaha Corporation remained an instrument manufacturer. In 1987, on its 100th anniversity, Nippon Gakki Co. would be renamed to Yamaha to celebrate its founder.
