after hanging
After hanging is when one or more characters has been hanged, but is no longer hanging (i.e. the ligature is no longer providing constricting force via the character's body weight).
The image must show clear evidence of prior hanging: either the ligature itself still around the neck (but with visible slack or the character fully supported by something other than the neck) or ligature markings/bruising on the neck. In the case of markings/bruising, there must also be visible signs that a hanging actually occurred (e.g. a gallows, the removed ligature nearby, execution platform, tree branch, etc.).

This covers both lethal hangings (deceased characters) and non-lethal hangings (characters who were cut down while still alive, possibly unconscious, then revived) that are recent. Specifically, it is meant to depict the aftermath of a hanging. It applies regardless of purpose (execution, suicide, accident, or breathplay, or other purposes not listed here).
Examples
- A character lying on the ground, in a morgue, or on a table with the noose/rope still around their neck but no longer suspended.
- A corpse with prominent ligature marks, thin bruises around the neck and/or cyanosis, with the severed ligature visible in the background
- A survivor who was hanged to unconsciousness, cut down, and revived, now showing a bruised neck or the ligature still around their neck while recovering.
- Post-execution or post-suicide scenes where the body has been taken down but the ligature or marks remain as evidence.
- Dialogue that reveals the character had just been hanged.
Do not use this tag for
- Images where the character is still actively suspended by the neck (use hanged instead).
- Images with only generic neck marks or bruising and no evidence/context of an actual hanging having taken place (use neck markings or bruised neck instead).
- images where a character appears to be wearing a noose as an accessory (use noose neckwear instead).
- Ongoing or imminent hanging (use hanged or imminent hanging instead).
- Erotic asphyxiation or autoerotic asphyxiation scenes involving bagging or a garrote or the clear aftermath of those actions.
- Distant or vague past hangings with no visible evidence remaining in the current image (such as the James Franco “First Time?” meme).
- General asphyxiation or strangulation without hanging-specific context.
Not to be confused with
- hanged: The character is currently suspended by the neck.
- imminent hanging: The hanging is about to occur.
- noose neckwear: The character is wearing the noose or a fragment of the noose as an accessory.
- death: A character is deceased.
