Species: gremlin (spiral knights)

A race of small, furry mischievous humanoids from the video game Spiral Knights that serve as both enemies and friendly NPCs within the game.

Gremlins are fascinated with machinery and endlessly tinker away at any they can find, living inside the clockwork world of Cradle as its builders and repairmen. However, their efforts are often marred by their own tendency to break what they try to fix — or in many cases blow it up completely (they're fond of explosives). Many, if not most, of the hostile constructs encountered in the Clockworks are implied to be have been built by gremlins.

There are two primary groups of gremlins on Cradle:

The first, and overwhelmingly larger group, are those gremlins belonging to the Colony, ruled by King Tinkinzar, believing they serve the great plan of the Clockworks and are extremely hostile to anyone and anything that is not a part of that plan, the Knights of the Spiral Order in particular.

The second are a small group of gremlins who are outcasts from King Tinkinzar's colony. The outcasts have taken refuge in the towns of Haven and Emberlight but at the cost of being hated by their own kind. These gremlins are friendly to the Spiral Order and happily support it.

In-game, no gremlin has ever been seen without goggles or a mask, with it unknown what their actual eyes look like.

While gremlins do not have visible tails in-game, the overwhelming majority of fanart tends to give them a short, rabbit-like scut tail. However, while it was clear that tails were preferred in fanart, there was debate among the fanbase as to whether or not tails were canon for gremlins, and that debate would remain for the better part of a decade until the original designer for the gremlins ultimately vindicated the pro-tail faction, confirming in a Bluesky post that tails were indeed part of the original vision for them, and it just doesn't show in-game due to a combination of graphics limitations and the gremlin's own clothing.
