A single-seat fighter aircraft developed by the United Kingdom and introduced in 1938. The aircraft went through many different versions, all of them having the elliptical wings that are probably the most readily noticed feature, and served into the jet age (the last operational Spitfires were retired from the Irish Air Corps in 1961).
