Maternal death sounds like any mother dying.

I've been thinking about this tag too and I feel the best target might be death_during_birth or death_by_birth, leaning more toward the first one. x_during_y or x_by_y is the naming scheme that this site usually goes for.

Also maternal_death sounds gendered, whereas in fictional art, just about anyone can get pregnant or give birth.

Additionally there is a die_laying_egg tag which should be aliased too.

Is there a reason not to use "death by childbirth"? That is the usual phrasing.
