Topic: About the utility of the "voluptuous" tag

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Recently I have come to feel like voluptuous and similar tags like pear-shaped figure are too vague and inconsistent to be useful. I want to keep this thread focused on voluptuous, though.

Firstly I'd like to point out how broad of a descriptor voluptuous is. Here are five posts that at the time of writing all have the tag:

post #6189987 post #6216803 post #6188078 post #6244107 post #6240646

I do not believe that all five body types shown here are similar enough that they should all be described by the same tag. The wiki page for voluptuous states that voluptuous characters should have a relatively wide waist which disqualifies post #6189987, post #6216803, and post #6188078. Putting that specific requirement aside it's clear that these characters have very different proportions which aren't similar enough to be described by the same tag.

I've also noticed that wide hips, thick thighs, and a big butt are listed as requirements for voluptuous, yet there are plenty of posts in the tag where these qualities are not visible or at least not tagged. voluptuous -wide_hips -thick_thighs -big_butt produces over 11000 results and should produce near zero according to the wiki page for voluptuous. Honestly this speaks both to how vague voluptuous is and how undertagged wide hips, thick thighs, and big butt are.

I'd like to hear what other people think should be done about voluptuous or whether anything needs to be done at all. Maybe it should be aliased to a more specific name? Maybe it should be invalidated so more specific tags can take its place? Maybe we should just kill everyone who misuses it? Or maybe it's fine as it is? I'm interested to hear what other people think about the tag.

Personally, I've always been a bit unclear on exactly what body type voluptuous described beyond "sexually alluring". It seems that I'm not the only one.

The body shape tags are always a mess. You have people who want to make hyper granular tags for each additional millimeter of width and then you have people who just pick the hottest-sounding tag then you have people whose ideas of body image are so skewed they're tagging anything thicker than a toothpick as obese.

This tag's definition does definitely seem to be covered by other tags. The term's real-world use is super subjective. Invalidate it.

Looking at it, either can we:

A) clean it up and request a BUR so it HAS the criteria for it (implying voluptuous with big butts, wide hips, etc)

B) change the definition of the wiki so it fits the current consensus

C) like what this person said

D) do nothing and uses alternative curvy_figure/overweight related tags

C, IMO.
I've seen a number of discussions of this tag, almost all of them have moved my opinion in the direction 'inadequately specific and not savable'.

(usually if some meaning is savable, then precise usages are being mixed in with vague usages of a term (so you just say 'well we use it in sense A and explicitly not in sense B'), rather than this kind of case, where the usages may conflict but they're all vague usages.)
