Topic: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I need some help deciding if I should upload a certain DA Artist’s stuff to e6 or not.

Posted under General

As I’ve just said, there’s this one artist who I really love and support. So much so, that, for a while now, I’ve been thinking of boosting his popularity a little more by uploading his art and comics here in e621; with his permission, of course. But alas, I’m conflicted about this because he hates anything NSFW (despite the fact that a lot of his art is ecchi). Plus, I’m worried that he would probably be furious over my proposal. What should I do?

I mean... We do expect uploaders to have permission before uploading in all cases, so I'd hope you got permission anyways.

Speaking realistically, it’s not a hard requirement unless it’s outright stated, like an artist allowing some of their art here when they’re on the DNP list. The staff will still approve posts even if the artist blatantly lists their DNP on the art itself.

It’s encouraged to ask for permission first, yes, but barring any rule-breaking, the worst that will happen if you don’t is an increased chance the artist will file a takedown and your upload limit taking a hit.

As I understand it, it is a requirement, it's just untenable for us to check it preemptively every time, so we only check it for those who specifically request it.

As for "the artist explicitly listing their DNP on the art itself"? A lot of artists who do that either

  • explicitly upload their art to the site
  • have explicit exemptions for the site
  • have explicit exemptions for certain uploaders
  • have explicit exemptions for commissioners
  • have changed that policy (but obviously not updated older works to reflect that)

among other things that make relying on that really not useful. Besides, iirc, this is the second biggest furry site on the Internet; I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to just spend 10 minutes telling us to make them (c)DNP 1 time.

You don't understand, that artist and I have been friends for years now. If he found out that his art was uploaded here by yours truely, and WITHOUT his permission, than he would be heartbroken, feel betrayed and might even cancel his comic, which was kinda what happened when someone uploaded his now cancelled comic, Asriel Synth 2, to Yiff Party, which was basically a predecessor to Kemono Party: a website where you can pirate paysite content.

Then don't upload it. As much as you might want it here, that sounds like a recipe for a quick DNP.

It sounds to me like you're answering your own question. If that's the reaction they would have to their art being uploaded here, why be the cause of that reaction?

...and asking them for permission before uploading would cause this problem because...? You did initially say

is kinda a shitty friend. If they say no, then that's ok, they have every right to (& you can & should tell them to get added to the Avoid Posting list so we can take down anyone trying to do so against their wishes preemptively), but if they can't appreciate the motive, then that's their problem.

I don't think he'd be THAT angry at my proposal, I'm just afraid of what he might say.

Do it scared. The way I see it you have three options:
1. Do nothing. No risk, no benefit.
2. Upload without asking. You say this has gotten bad reactions when it happened before on other sites, so it will probably go badly here. High risk, low reward.
3. Ask. You might get told no, but unless you react aggressively (or annoyingly) will likely not see lasting consequences. Might gain your friend more audience/business if you're given the green light. Low risk, medium reward.

It feels like you're looking for permission to upload without asking. I don't think anyone's going to give you their blessing for that, no matter how much you go "but he might think I'm weird." Either ask and own it, or don't ask and deal with the consequences.

Or do nothing. That's also an option.

Thank you so much for the advice.
