Topic: What's your opinion on the new "Goat" movie?

Posted under Off Topic

Yeah, just asking, like usual. I actually haven't watched it, I'll be back after I watch it.

I haven’t seen it either but the trailers and everything I’ve seen remind me a lot of the latest TMNT film which I really enjoyed, so I might check it out when it leaves theaters. I wonder if in the future kids will be nostalgic about this post spider-verse style of animation the way a lot of adults now are nostalgic about the cal-arts style or 90s/late 2000s animation.

Haven't seen it, but that black cheetah(?) lady looks cool; I'd be happy to see genderbent art of them.

only part i've seen of it is an edit on instagram reels and a trailer i later watched, seems pretty good just from those snippets

It was OK. Some very cute character designs. Watch Marty Supreme instead if it's still playing and you want to watch an unusual comedy / sports thing, but Goat delivers what it promises (kids movie about a Goat who can Ball).

Updated

Haven't seen it, but I swiped past a video from The Nostalgia Critic of all people about it earlier. I didn't watch that either, but the video title claimed that it was "good"

Might watch it. Seems fun even though the whole underdog sports thing is a type of story that appeals to me personally.

Just watched it on theater, it's dubbed in my native language btw so there might be local changes, but here's what I could say on top of my head (minor spoilers?):

It's a good underdog story (has a few similarities with zootopia), some jokes are a hit or miss especially goat anatomy/sounds related like that one goat scream

The character design are great, even the background characters look kinda good. Minor amounts of product placement some of them is a missed opportunity really

The main players shows their strengths AND flaws. While chaotic neutral Modo can be too weird but still good?

The world building is stunning, it's like post-apocalyptic overgrown town on the outside but it's lively inhabitated in the inside, with anvenger level threats in the stadium

edit: It's worth the watch really, I highly recommend it

Haven't watched it but I saw a poster for it at the bus stop last week.

I don't recognize any of the voice cast, so I'm not expecting any grade A material.

That doesn't seem like a very good way to determine a work's potential quality

I can't believe that people actually gauge the potential quality of something on whether they already know the names of the voice cast.

like, I know that's why every single animated movie since Aladdin has a cast that's almost exclusively a bunch of celebrities who have, like, zero VO experience, but it's still kinda wild to see someone admit this in the wild.

"What is this? Desu Noto? Must suck, look at all these random VAs; if it was any good, they'd have put the funny British talk show guy in it."

I mean, putting famous people in it didn't do Cats (2019) any good, right?

But Desu Noto has Kappei Yamaguchi, the voice behind anime pillars such as Inuyasha, Usopp, Ranma Saotome and this fat gay dog

i mean it has probably the most famous modern NBA player besides Lebron James in its producer and VA credits. movies produced by celebrity athletes are NEVER bad

so you think it's going to be as good as or better than zootopia?

sorry, i wasn't trying to say it was going to be bad, it just won't be getting as much attention as something with big hollywood names.

I wouldn't expect it to get that level of attention, but popularity & quality aren't always in sync with each other.

The fact that someone who's watched Death Note didn't know that doesn't bode well for a random non-anime fan recognizing it. Besides, it's a lot more common for Japanese VAs to be hired because they're quality VAs first & famous second than in Hollywood; for the leads, it's a lot more likely to be famous first & quality VAs nineteenth. I like John Oliver as much as the next guy, but having him replace Rowan Atkinson is a bit of a slap in the face, and keeping James Earl Jones when his voice is that aged is... certainly a choice, though I wouldn't call it one based on his strengths (or even capabilities) as a VA at the time. Speaking of quality & popularity not being aligned with one another...

the choice to use old several unused takes from 1994 (and at least one that actually was used in the original) probably was, though.
