Topic: Regarding sourceless alts/fixes.

Posted under General

Howdy! Commissioner of various works of art here.
So, within my time commissioning certain artists, not every single alt to an image I have has been uploaded.

For good reason, I can imagine. Whether it be due to bloat and the need not to share very last iteration an image has.
Regardless, there are some I'd wish to share here.

Yet, I am unsure as to whether or not I can. Since these alts have no source, or because they are art which differs from that of which the artist uploaded. Such has having been a minor fix to mistakes made that they fixed of which I was immensely grateful for.
So, of course, my question here on this forum is to simply ask if I can upload these pieces I have. And, if so, how I should go about sourcing them.

I believe from a year ago I was told that utilizing my own FA account as a source was fine and applicable. Yet, I shall ask again here just to double check lest anything regarding that ruling has changed within the past year or so.

It feels more honest to do so especially if the image I intend to upload is one that was fixed. Such as several I have which adds a scar to a character of mine that was previously absent within several images due to my forgetful tendencies.
Yet perhaps I am in the wrong in regards to those feelings. So that's why I'm asking before kicking open the door so to speak.

I'll address your questions in two sections.

Alts

  • You may upload whatever you like even if it does not exist anywhere else online. You just have to make sure that it is within what's allowed in our Uploading Guidelines.
  • For all alts, they need to be linked with their original parent. This can be done by including the "Parent Post ID" on the Upload page or editing it after it was posted.
  • For sourcing the alts, selecting "No available source" is a valid option in this case.
  • I would actually dissuade simply adding your FA account as the source as it is not helpful in tracking down the source, see howto:source for more info.

Fixes

  • Fixes are treated differently from alts. In most cases, the "fixed" one would be superior over the "flawed" one, and therefore they are the only one kept.
  • There are two ways to post artwork fixes:
    • e621:Replacements (new & recommended method)
      • 1) Contact an admin or any staff members that have the replacements beta permission.
      • 2) Provide them a link to the existing "flawed" post on e621 and an external link to the "fixed" version.
      • 3) Ask for them to submit a replacement request on your behalf.
      • Note: Using this method will preserve the post's URL, comments, score, and fav count.
    • e621:Flag for deletion (old method)
      • 1) Submit the "fixed" version yourself as you would do with any regular upload.
      • 2) Copy the new post's ID. This will be the superior version.
      • 3) Go to the old "flawed" post and search for the "Flag" option.
      • 4) Select "Duplicate or inferior version of another post" as your flag reason and include the new post's ID in the "Inferior of Post #" section.
      • 5) The old post will eventually be deleted while the new post will still remain.
      • Note: Using this method will remove the (old) post's URL, comments, and score, but the fav count will be transferred to the new one.
  • For sourcing fixes, you would ideally have one source that features the fixed version already. If you don't, then you would generally still include the old post's sources as being the primary source (even though the latest fixed version isn't found there). Just make sure to include the alternate_version_at_source tag whenever applicable.

Updated

Undertstood. Thank you! This is very clear and concise and helps immensely. I struggle to understand things sometimes, so, I appreciate this.
I shall use this information going forward.
