Topic: anyone familiar with the ugly_bastard genre?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I've removed the tag from some posts where the character's appearance, context scenario clues, and other cues or lack of I thought were too "tame" for the ugly_bastard tag. I've also made some touches to the wiki very slightly.

I am not 100% sure with my tag changes so I want to see if anyone else familiar with the genre can help.

Updated

As far as I know, it's a legitimate genre, but this tag's use is all over the place. There's quite a number of uses that are just ugly characters. I'm not familiar with it enough to be able to think of good twys guidelines for proper tagging.

It might just be best to disambiguate it (is there a tag for intentionally ugly characters?) and use a tag like ugly_bastard_(genre) to make it clear it's not supposed to be used for stuff like this

The wiki isn't right. Netorare means "to be stolen". I know we tend to conflate the two in modern culture, but it's much closer to infidelity rather than cuckolding. And indeed, netorare is aliased to infidelity. If you want to be technical about it, ugly bastard stuff usually starts nonconsensual at first but transforms into willingness on the woman's part over time.

I'm not sure I'd say it's a genre exactly. It's more like a character type. Honestly, they pop up in netorare or rape stuff but not really anywhere else. I don't see the need for the concept on here. It's mostly just an ugly person + forced, questionable_consent, until_they_like_it and/or infidelity.

Of course, if we can hammer out twys guidelines, it'd make sense to just make it a tag for deliberately ugly characters.

It is a legitimate subgenre for hentai.

KnowYourMeme briefly touched on what it is all about, but it is probably not the best source for information.

  • "Ugly Bastard" is a subgenre of hentai in which older unattractive men attempt to have sex with and sometimes rape young girls.

Danbooru simply defines it as a character type, instead of a specific sexual scenario.

  • An unattractive man, often old, bald and/or overweight. In Japanese NSFW works, they are usually used as a "self-insert" device character, and being paired with younger or more attractive women, either through rape or prostitution. This character type is prevalent in the netorare genre.

Gelbooru defines it as a character type as well, but emphasises on their perverted nature.

  • A sleazy character intentionally designed with an unattractive face in contrast to their victims/objects of lust. On top of their facial features, characters like this are often drawn as being fat, unkempt, or visibly much older than the characters they lust after. They can appear in non-hentai works, but they more commonly appear in hentai works as a villain.

Danbooru + Gelbooru's descriptions might work. I think it doesn't have to be paired up with female though.
Imo this post (male/male) can be tagged as ugly bastard.

I don't think that fits the genre. He doesn't look particularly ugly, a bit overweight and hairy, but there are people into that. The genre is defined by having a large unattractive guy gooning over small attractive girl. It's not meant to be a tag for "an ugly guy" because that's too subjective. Part of my problem with the tag is how subjectively used it already can be (how ugly can or can't the guy be for it to count?), but as long as the guy is purposely designed to be unattractive in a pretty specific scenario, it's okay enough I suppose. But applying it to any "ugly guy" just doesn't work for TWYS.

So male/female + age/size_differece?
I think _(genre) suffix is not a bad idea. The current name makes me think it can be used even on solo posts like post #4965545

I can imagine a scenario with male/male if the "victim" is particularly effeminate, see femboy ugly_bastard.
In addition, a significant age_difference or size_difference is not necessary, there just needs to be a significant mismatch of "looks" while also having some sort of power difference favouring the "ugly bastard" I guess.

If we are going for purely ugly characters, I think it might just become a rehash of ugly (which we have invalidated).
