Aliasing gemstone → gem

More suggestions:
Having specific gemstone types doesn't make sense for tagging since many of them can be different colors. For example, diamonds, sapphires, and topaz can all be a variety of colors.

I suggest we switch to using (color)_gem instead. This makes tagging/searching easier too (one does not need to know an amethyst is purple to tag/search for a purple gem, for example).

(color)_jewel/s, (color)_gems -> (color)_gem
(color)_gem -> gem (implication)

The gemstone types themselves need disambiguation. Although in reality some gemstones can be different colors, this doesn't necessitate disambiguation on its own since they will almost certainly be tagged for their most well known color. However, many gemstone types are used as character names as well. For this reason, I think it would be better to disambiguate.

Alias to either gem_(disambiguation) or *_(disambiguation):
diamond
emerald
ruby
sapphire
pearl
quartz
opal
amethyst
topaz

Plural forms can maybe be aliased directly to (color)_gem. If you want to be extra thorough, see the gem encyclopedia.

Diamond could also mean so maybe it should have it's own disambiguation even if other gems don't.

Some characters already use their own _(...) tag, but some still need to at least be sorted into a _(character) tag.

Aliasing? -1

why gemstone and gem should be separate tags....?

+1 for the alias.
But I feel like making different colored gem tags is a bit too granular, and who would search for or blacklist gems by color? Not saying its a bad idea, just that there's no real point.

I thought about suggesting they all be aliased to gem, but I figured, 'why not?' Especially since they're already mostly separated by color. Maybe it would be useful to someone trying to find an image they can only vaguely recall had green gems or something.

That's fair! I'm not exactly against the idea, just playing devil's advocate I suppose.

I do think that most of these should have the *_(gem) suffix. It's way to common for even the most obscure rocks to be changed to a character tag at some point.

Perhaps make that *_(gemstone). Steven Universe's gem (species) makes it so that peridot (gem) could be confused with peridot (steven universe). Among other examples from the series, of course.

I used to remember the answer to this but I forget the precise reason. I think it's because Jade is a silicate non-crystal structure.

The problem is I don't think all gemstones are crystals, either. I think the only defining characteristic of a gem is that isn't a metal, so why Jade, a shiny valuable stone, is not a gem, I'm not really sure.

If a gem is defined as not being a metal, then air would be a gem. :P

Air isn't a mineral.

Gemstone is a loose non-scientific term. Mineral, crystal, metal, etc are scientific classifications.

I know, I was poking fun at how unspecific your description of a gem was. ;P

I've made the following changes:

Unfortunately since basically *all* of these are both common names for fursonas and titles of pokémon games, we'll need to manually move these over. For simplicity I'd say it's safe to move basically any post without a gem to <gem>_(character), but anybody wants to sort further feel free to.
